ABOUT ATELIER SEPTEMBER

Atelier September is always in progress, always evolving, the sum of many moving parts and many participants.

Atelier September is a kind of homecoming—both in the memories evoked by familiar flavors and beautiful objects, as well as through the lifelong friends we make gathered around a table.

For me, blue is defining. Blue is the connection between heaven and earth. Loaded with memory and associations. The hue takes me elsewhere. To the ancient East, to intense pigments ground from lapis lazuli, to Egypt, Palmyra, Afghanistan. To aristocracy and Danish porcelain. The blue boat I sailed as a child. The stone in my father's ring: lapis lazuli carved with our crest. His spirit in everlasting, physical form. The ring is an object that carries my family history and, although this may sound weird, it guides me as I wear it. An identity. A spirit that exists in one small stamp—A.S—in ultramarine on a plain white card.

From the beginning, I had this idea that everyone would have a sense of belonging. The staff, the guests, both the people who came all the time and the first timers. It was a utopian idea powered by my social nature and my desire to make a welcoming space where people wanted to stay for a while. It’s intuitive. In a way, you have to first relate to yourself in order to relate to others. Engage. Anticipate. The more popular we became, the less inclusive it felt, and the regulars got crowded out. We got write-ups in the paper. Some celebrities came. This is intimidating for some people, thrilling for others. So we just tried to live up to our mantra from day on. Every guest is a regular from the first time they walk in the door.
